Dental plaque is something we all deal with, but understanding what it is and how to manage it is key to maintaining a healthy smile. At Oral Experts Group, with clinics at Range Dental and Southtown Dental in Toowoomba, we believe in educating our patients so they can confidently care for their teeth and gums every day.
What is Dental Plaque?
Dental plaque is a soft, sticky film that forms on your teeth when bacteria in your mouth mix with food particles and saliva. Plaque contains millions of bacteria, and if not removed regularly, it can harden into tartar (calculus), which can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.
Why is Plaque a Problem?
Plaque is the main cause of:✔ Tooth decay (cavities) – Acid produced by plaque bacteria erodes tooth enamel, leading to decay.✔ Gum disease – Plaque build-up near the gumline can cause gingivitis (early gum disease), and if untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more serious infection affecting the gums and bone.✔ Bad breath – Plaque and food particles can cause persistent bad breath if not cleaned away properly.
How to Control Dental Plaque at Home
Good oral hygiene is the most effective way to manage plaque. Here’s what we recommend at Oral Experts Group, in line with the Australian Dental Association (ADA) guidelines:
✔ Brush twice daily using fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.✔ Floss once a day or use interdental brushes to clean between teeth.✔ Limit sugary foods and drinks, as these feed plaque bacteria.✔ Rinse with water after meals if you can’t brush right away.
How Professional Dental Visits Help
Even with excellent home care, plaque can harden into tartar over time. Regular professional cleans at Range Dental or Southtown Dental remove tartar build-up in areas that brushing and flossing can’t reach, reducing your risk of cavities and gum disease.
When to Book a Dental Check-Up
The ADA recommends visiting your dentist every six months for an exam and clean, or more often if you’re at higher risk for gum disease or decay. Our experienced dentists at Oral Experts Group are here to assess your oral health and provide advice tailored to your needs.
